In Memory of Miss Claire Oechsle

This page is dedicated to Miss Claire Oechsle. She was an 89 year-old survivor of Katrina, who came to live in Baton Rouge after losing her home and all of her possessions.  Miss Claire never married and lost her only brother in WWII, so her loyal pets Honey and Lady were like her children.  After they died, she continued to have a soft place in her heart for the many stray and throw away dogs and cats that roamed her neighborhood, so  they always found food at her back door.  She refused to call the animal control unit because she couldn't bear to think of them being "gassed."  Actually, the very last thing she did before being rescued on a rubber raft from her flooded home, was to open a large bag of cat food and leave on top of her bed, hoping any stray/lost animals might find food and refuge there.  Early this year, knowing her days were coming to a close, she requested that a close friend locate a no-kill animal shelter, so that she might make a special donation to help those who were helping the sick and homeless dogs and cats, in our area. It is through her donation helping homeless animals like these is made possible. She was and continues to be a blessing to these innocent victims.

Dumpster Dogs  Animals are routinely dropped off at dumping areas in rural parishes. These dogs were foraging for food at least three days before they were picked up by Northside. Thanks to  Miss Oechsle they will be treated for mange and various other problems and spayed.  They will be looking for a home soon!             Headed home!
